Akhilesh launches free laptop scheme

Around 10,000 get the machines

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched the ambitious free laptop scheme for students, who have cleared class 12. Around 10,000 students were given laptops at a function here. Akhilesh launched the scheme by distributing laptops to 51 students.

The CM said laptops will provide an opportunity to students belonging to weaker section of the society to compete with those who have the resources. “It will keep them connected with the fast developing world, and also help them in their studies,” Akhilesh said.

He added that the government is committed to fulfil the promises made by the party during last year’s Assembly elections. The government has earmarked Rs 2,800 crore for laptops and tablets in the current year’s Budget. The laptops will be distributed to around 15 lakh youngsters in the state.

The scheme has invited opposition parties’ ire, for what they term it as ‘politicisation’.
Every laptop contains words poore hote vaade (fulfilling  promises) and ‘tamper proof’ images of Akhilesh and his father and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on its cover.

The images of the father-son duo will pop up each time the system is restarted.
“The laptops are being distributed from government money. Its a government scheme and not of any particular party. It is not fair to show the pictures of Mulayam and Akhilesh,” opposition parties said.
