Punjab Police to quiz Vijender Singh again

Last Updated 12 March 2013, 21:06 IST

With the list of evidence against Olympian boxer Vijender and his alleged connections with drug kingpin Anoop Singh Kahlon growing, Punjab police are preparing for another interview with him on his alleged involvement with the multi-crore drug racket busted in the state last week.

The police are said to be unhappy over Vijender’s answers during his three-hour interview with the investigating team on Monday at Panchkula.

The Olympian, a deputy superintendent of police in Haryana, had even refused blood and hair samples to the team saying it was insulting for him since he had not taken drugs and said the National anti-doping agency should take the samples if necessary.

If he is tested within ninety days, the time heroin samples remain in the hair, police can verify Vijender’s claims that he had not taken the drug.

Police is also said to be considering approaching the court in the wake of the boxer’s refusal to offer his blood and hair samples.

Police have details of Vijender’s calls with the drug kingpin Kahlon, with whom he is said to have spoken several times, which is adequate to establish a prima facie case against the Olympic medallist.

International boxer Ram Singh, who claimed that he and Vijender had experimented with heroin a few times, is considering turning approver, which would spell further trouble for Vijender.

Sources said the police has several incriminating evidences against Vijender, including confessions and telephone records but the police is focusing the investigations on the drug peddlers and their nexus with others.

According to sources, Ram Singh was showing withdrawal symptoms like insomnia and restlessness.

The Olympic bronze medallist has taken leave from the national boxing camp, currently on at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, until Mar 14.

Vijender did not deny meeting the Canada-based kingpin Kahlon, but maintains he did not have direct contacts with him or taken heroin.

A car registered in the name of Vijender’s wife was found outside Kahlon’s residence from where police have confiscated drugs.

They also seized 26 kg of heroin worth Rs 120 crore in international market from a drug peddler last week.
