Fariz enters quarters; Manjanna makes exit

Fariz Mohammad continued his dream run to sail into the quarterfinals of the National Grasscourt tennis championship here on Wednesday.

Fariz, who toppled the top seed Siddharth Rawat in the first round, scored a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Delhi’s Kunal Anand.

Veteran Nitten Kirrtane of Maharashtra remained on course as he thrashed qualifier Vinod Sewa 6-1, 6-1 to make the last eight.

In the best match of the day, local lad Rupesh Roy overcame Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory in a marathon two-hour 31-minute battle.

Karnataka’s Sagar Manjanna went down fighting to Abhijeet Tiwari of Chhattisgarh 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
In the women’s section, Gujarat’s Ankita Raina entered the quarterfinals beating Nitya Raj Baburan of Tamil Nadu 6-1, 6-1 while veteran Rushmi Chakravarthi also advanced with ease.
