Raja Bhaiya enjoys clout over top cops

One year of ministers tenure sees 6 police chiefs

During his one year tenure as a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet, sacked Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya’s home district of Pratapgarh saw as many as six police chiefs reflecting his clout in the government.

A scrutiny of tenures of different district police chiefs in Pratapgarh reveals that on an average a superintendent of police could last there for only two months.

When Raja Bhaiya had been administered oath of office and secrecy and made a minister on March 15 last year, Deepak Kumar was the police chief of Pratapgarh. Less than a fortnight later Kumar was shunted out.

Shalabh Mathur, who replaced Kumar, too did not last for long. He was transferred barely a month and a half later. Then his successor Om Prakash Sagar lasted for little over a month. The next police chief Kiran S, however, had a seven-month tenure before being transferred.

Kiran S was replaced by Anil Kumar Rai in February this year. Rai was shunted soon after recent killings took place at Raja Bhaiya’s assembly constituency Kunda.

L R Kumar has now taken over the command of the district. It remains to be seen for how long does he last.

Officials on condition of anonymity here say no police chief or for that matter any officer could last long in Pratapgarh unless he enjoys Raja Bhaiya’s patronage.

“From district police chiefs to the station house in-charge, Raja Bhaiya’s interference is everywhere,” an official said.

Significantly the sacked minister himself had candidly said that he would have got DSP Zia-ul-Haque, who was killed in the Kunda violence, “transferred rather than murdered” if he had any problem with him.

The slain police officer’s wife Parveen Azad had said that Raja Bhaiya’s writ runs in Kunda and people never raise their voice against him. She had said that his husband had to pay the price as did not bow to the political bosses.
