Oppn fumes as Dikshit mum on water shortage

Last Updated 18 March 2013, 19:19 IST

Demanding assurance from chief minister Sheila Dikshit in the House that water problems in their constituencies should be sorted out, BJP MLAs on Monday complained that Dikshit calls them in meetings with Delhi Jal Board officials but nothing concrete ever happens.

When Dikshit refused to give an assurance or comment on the complaints made by the opposition MLAs, they indulged in slogan shouting, leading to a heated exchange between them and the treasury benches.

While Dikshit chose not to speak on the issue in the House, she later told journalists that things have improved a lot over the years and she will look into problems raised by the members.

Earlier in the House, two BJP MLAs, Sat Prakash Rana and Dharam Dev Solanki, trooped into the well of the House demanding a reply from Dikshit on the matter.

After lodging his grievance related to water in the House on Thursday, Solanki again on Friday repeated the same water woes of his constituency (Dwarka). “There has been no water, just assurances for the past nine years,” said Solanki.

Rana told the House that he has written 18,000 letters to Dikshit in the past four years, but the water situation remains as grim as ever.

“We want an assurance from Dikshit that she will resolve the matter in a time-bound manner,” said Rana. To his disappointment, Dikshit refused to comment.

This angered the opposition members, who started shouting. While Speaker Yoganand Shastri tried to pacify them, BJP MLAs were heard asking the purpose of the House if the ruling party or the CM refuse to even give “false assurances”. Urban development minister Arvinder Singh demanded action against the “unruly” BJP MLAs.

Addressing the House on the motion of thanks to Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna’s speech, which he delivered on the first day of the budget session, leader of opposition V K Malhotra condemned him for not talking about the law and order situation in the city.
