Technical snags hit Bellary power plant

The Bellary Thermal Power Plant (BTPS) at Kudutini, that was set up with much expectation, has failed to address the power crisis in the State. While unit 1 has stopped power generation due to technical snag following the recent fire mishap, unit 2 is not operating to its optimum level.

There has been a deficit of 500 megawatt (MW) per day since unit 1 was shut for maintenance work. The fire gutted major cables last week and the work is on to restore them. It will resume operation in a week, said G Ratnamma, the BTPS executive director.

The unit 2 with 500 MW capacity is now generating up to 450 MW a day, Ratnamma added. Sources said the 500-MW capacity unit 1 could generate only 300-350 MW since the past one month.

Besides, residents of the surrounding villages have complained that no steps have been taken to check ecological damage caused by the fly ash from the plant.
