Ejipura evictees to get new homes

The evicted residents of Ejipura Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quarters will get homes under the Central government’s Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana scheme, said N A Harris, Shantinagar legislator.

He told mediapersons on Sunday that tenders have already been floated for construction of 900 houses at Suligunte village near Sarjapur Road. “The process will be completed in about a month’s time and the construction will begin soon after. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken charge of the five-acre land, where the houses will be constructed, from the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Limited,” he added.

Harris, however, refuted allegations of his involvement in the eviction drive. “The construction of the homes is, in no way, connected to the upcoming Assembly elections,” he clarified.

‘Lure for vote’

Jaya Mary, one of the evictees, said Harris had told them that if they voted for him in the elections, he would provide them homes on Sarjapur Road. “If this is the case, we are ready to vote for him as we have no other option,” she said, adding that the residents were living on the streets since the eviction.
