With Arvind Kejriwal’s indefinite fast, urging people not to pay ‘inflated’ power bills, entered the second day on Sunday, his Aam Aadmi Party said 36,743 people signed up on the first day of their disobedience movement.

“On the first day of Arvind’s fast, 36,743 citizens of Delhi have challenged chief minister Sheila Dikshit saying that they will no longer pay the illegitimately high electricity and water charges inflated due to her corruption,” the party said on Sunday. “These people have joined Aam Aadmi Party’s civil disobedience and have boldly given in writing they will no longer pay these bills.”

Kejriwal began his fast on Saturday morning at a house in Sunder Nagri in east Delhi. AAP leaders said the venue has been chosen as the house owner had to borrow money to pay his water and electric bills.

“The DERC is claiming a loss of Rs 20,000 crore and if it attempts to recover it from users, 35 lakh Delhiites will see their bills rise up by Rs 5,000 per month,” Kejriwal said on Sunday. He said there are many citizens who have paid bills, but it does not show in discoms records, which indicates money is being put into hidden accounts. “Sheila Dixit says these companies refuse to be audited. If she is the CM, can she not enforce an audit? How can a government be so helpless?”

“They can cancel the licences of these companies if they do not comply. But she is in collusion with them and all these are just excuses.”

The AAP claimed support of engineers from the electricity board. All India Power Engineers Federation on Sunday joined the AAP movement.
