'Salman is an audience's actor'

He might be the younger brother of Salman and Arbaaz Khan but actor-director-producer Sohail Khan has carved a niche for himself.

Though one has not seen Sohail in front or behind the camera for a while, his fans were more than happy to see him as the captain of ‘Mumbai Heroes’ at the recently-concluded Celebrity Cricket League. Metrolife caught up with him while he was in the City.

Sohail expresses that in all his years of visiting the City, one thing that hasn’t changed is the spirit of the people here. It’s the same spirit that motivates him to continue as the captain of the team, which he is very proud of though they didn’t make it to the finals. “The team as a whole has improved and bonded very well compared to the last few years. It’s nice to see the entire tournament grow as well,” Sohail says.

Now that the tournament is over, Sohail says that he is eager to get back behind the camera, directing his brother Salman Khan in a yet-to-be-titled movie. “I haven’t directed anything after Maine Dil Tujhko Diya. I was busy producing films and waiting for the right script to come along. Finally, we got it and I can’t reveal much. It’s a social drama and it’s going to be very interesting as we will be showcasing Salman in a very different way,” he says.

Having started shooting for it, Sohail says that directing Salman has been a great experience. “Salman is an audience’s actor. He performs for them and he really gets into the character and makes it his own,” he describes.

There was also news of Sohail directing a 3D film for children — starring Salman — called Sher Khan. “That is still in the process. It will take a bit of time but we will start it soon enough,” he states. One of the biggest motivations for him to take up a children’s film was his son. “Whatever excites him, excites me. I want to make a movie that will be liked by all. My son’s fascination with animals provoked me to direct the movie,” he adds.

Probe him about the recent tiff he had with newbie Varun Dhawan at a party in Mumbai and Sohail dismisses these claims with a smile. “I don’t know what you are talking about. Things are fine between me and Varun. They were just rumours,” he signs off.
