Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam took a ride in Delhi Metro on Sunday. It was his first visit to the Metro.

“DMRC is indeed a great organisation of excellence. It is environment-friendly, user-friendly and above all DMRC is an asset to the nation,” Dr Kalam wrote in the visitor’s book.

The 11th President boarded the Metro at the Central Secretariat station and travelled till Rajiv Chowk, where he saw the interchange arrangements for the Jahangirpuri–HUDA City Centre, Yellowline, and Dwarka Sector 21–NOIDA City Centre, Blueline corridors.

He then went to Ramkrishna Ashram Marg station to see the elevated section and from there to Barakhamba Road on the underground section.

He also visited Metro Bhawan, the corporate headquarter of the DMRC.

“Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been rightly certified by the United Nations as the first Metro rail and rail-based system in the world to get carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Kalam said while speaking to the employees on ‘dynamics of leadership’.

“DMRC is helping in reducing pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tonnes every year.”
“Let me congratulate all the members of DMRC for operating and maintaining a clean, safe and efficient transport system for the citizens of Delhi and other commuters,” he said.

“Each one of you has cultivated a culture of excellence and congratulations to you for this,” Kalam added.

Kalam was accompanied by DMRC’s managing director, Mangu Singh, director (electrical) Satish Kumar, director (operations) Sharat Sharma and director (finance) K K Saberwal.
Delhi Metro has maintained a punctuality rate of 99.7 per cent in the last one year, said an official.
