Deputy Commissioner Dr M T Reju said the pumping of water for irrigation purposes from Baje dam has temporarily stopped in order to facilitate water supply and reduce water scarcity problem during summer.

Speaking to the media persons, the DC said expecting a probable drought in the coming days, the district administration has taken measures aiding judicious management of available water sources.

The measure is taken to at least supply water in every alternative day for all areas. The shutters in Shiroor dam is kept open for the flow of water towards Baje dam to minimise the area of evaporation. The water-level is constantly monitored, he added.

Stating that water-level is decreasing, the DC said measures will be taken to facilitate minimum water supply till the commencement of monsoon. “We were expecting some showers following couple of rains in Belthangady and Subramanya area. However, our expectations turned out to be futile”. Hence, water is saved for future use, however, the scenario is not that worse, he added.

Erratic power supply is another problem that creates obstacles in pumping the available water on time. Measures will be taken to provide water on three days at the weekend for the farmers in the area, he added.
