Jaggery unit raided; liquor worth Rs 6 lakh seized

Police seized Rs six lakh worth liquor that was illegally stored at an alemane (jaggery making unit) at Thimmanakoppalu in the taluk here on Monday.

The liquor was found at the unit belonging to Ningegowda and his son Viji, residents of Doddabyadarahalli of the taluk. But the suspects are absconding.

Upon receiving information from the raitha sangha members, police attempted to raid another alamane belonging to Gram panchayat former president N Ravi that was opposed by JD(S) leaders D T Dharma, D N Ravi Thammanna and Chandrakumar.

Heated arguments and fisticuffs prevailed for a while between the raitha sangha members and the JD(S) workers. However, police intervened and brought the situation under control.

S Raju, Chikkade Prakash, Vijendra, Mess Javaregowda and others were injured in the melee. The raid was conducted under the guidance of Dy SP Krishnaswamy. CPI Venkatesh, PSI Manju and other staff took part in the operation.

ZP member A L Kempegowda demanded arrest of owners of jaggery unit Ningegowda and Viji. Addressing a press meet, he said that 305 boxes of spurious liquor that was found in the unit was stored, to be allegedly distributed among the voters during the forthcoming assembly polls. Hence, the election commission should immediately take action and arrest the violators and those who caused injuries to the raitha sangha members, he stressed. Taluk president H L Prakash said a letter would be written to election commission in this regard.

KRS police have arrested one person who was illegally transporting liquor on Tuesday. Siddaraju of Mogarahalli Manti village has been arrested and 32 bottles of liquor was seized. According to rules, a person is not allowed to carry more than five and a half litres of liquor, said inspector Harishkumar. KRS police have registered a case.
