Mysore varsity plans innovative steps

Bringing the University of Mysore under the ambit of Innovation University, establishment of International Centre for Chemical Biology and Drug Research, inviting life professors and chalking out programmes for centenary year celebrations of the university in 2016 -- these were the significant proposals made in the budget estimate of the University of Mysore on Wednesday.

Referring to the proposals, Vice Chancellor, Prof K S Rangappa said that Innovation University is the ambitious plan of University Grants Commission (UGC). The University would be benefitted if UGC accepted the proposal. It would also ensure further development of the University, with the possibility of a fund flow to the tune of Rs 200 crore to Rs 300 crore.

The nation has a legion of internationally renowned scientists with quality research works to their credit. If the varsity succeeded in attracting scholarly persons by establishing International Centre for Chemical Biology and Drug Research, it would again benefit the varsity. A nominal sum of Rs two crore has been set aside, besides planning to forward proposals to different agencies to establish the centre.

‘Life Professor’, another ambitious programme will be formed of recognized academy fellows like that of Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), who will share their expertise with the students and research fellows. It has been planned to set up a corpus fund, and a nominal sum of Rs two crore  has been set aside for the purpose.
