Sunday storm brings down poles, trees

Last Updated 01 April 2013, 20:59 IST

After facing much trouble due to scorching heat and shortage of water, the citizens are having to deal with the aftereffects of heavy rain.

Electricity poles and trees fell, following heavy showers with thunder and lightning Sunday evening.

“The taluk has received an overall 14.1 cm rain. Of the hoblis, Kasaba received four cm, Mittemari received 3.6 cm, Cheloor 1.4 cm and Goolur got 0.6 cm rain,” Agriculture Department officer Shivanagappa informed Deccan Herald.

Water is now seen flowing down the main roads of the town as well as in the villages. The potholes on the roads in and near the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand, Mutton Market Circle and HN Circle are all filled with slush. Passengers travelling to Chintamani, Cheloor, Goolur and Thimmampalli have had to travel in the rain to get buses within the KSRTC bus stand too.

Trouble to walk

Vendors who set up store by the main road in Bagepalli town and even pedestrians are unable to use the footpaths. Also, in many places the rainwater has blending with sewer, walking on the streets has become a dreadful and unhealthy task for the pedestrians.
On the outskirts of the town, at Theemakalapalli, asbestos sheets and electricity poles have collapsed on a house. “Nobody in the house, however, has been hurt,” said Bhavanna, the owner, speaking to Deccan Herald.

Road block

A tree had also uprooted on a cross road , disturbing vehicular movement.
The farmers in the taluk still prefer to look at the positive side of the rain.
Having expected showers no earlier than between May and June, they found the sudden downpour on Sunday providential. With borewells drying up rapidly, the farmers had all kept their fingers crossed, hoping for rain. “Otherwise, we can only depend on the Almighty to save us,” they had said.

There had even been several instances of the farmers offering special prayers, rustic and conventional, to get rain at any cost.
