Fake cops land in police net

Last Updated 25 October 2009, 19:57 IST

The accused are Joseph (23) and Balu (27) from Shyampura Main Road in Ashoknagar.
Police said the victims Harshavardhan and Chetan Kumar, who had completed BBM, took a house on rent adjacent to Joseph’s house. Joseph had told them that he was a police inspector attached to Central Crime Branch.

The two accused then lured the victims saying they would secure them jobs in the police department. They collected Rs 10,000 each from the two along with their certificates and other records. The duo gave them two fake hall tickets for a written test for inspectors’ post scheduled on October 28 at Yelahanka.

Later, Joseph started contacting them on their cellphones and started demanding for another Rs 10,000 , police said.

Harshavardhan and Chetan Kumar, who became suspicious, approached the police and lodged a complaint.

On a tip off, the police caught the accused near BBMP office in Byatarayanapura, when they were standing wearing the police helmet with a bike pasted with police symbol.
Joseph, a car driver by profession, learnt about the cancellation of recently held examinations to recruit candidates to inspectors’ post through the media.

With this information, he decided to make some money and took Balu’s help. Amruthalli sub-division ACP Ramachandrappa said the duo must have duped several unemployed youth.
