A 21-year-old woman attempted suicide by jumping from the third floor of a residential building at west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Monday over her boyfriend’s continuous refusal to marry her.
The woman, a resident of Swaroop Nagar, is pursuing MA in Journalism and Mass Communication through correspondence from Delhi University and simultaneously works with a consultancy firm at Pitampura. Police said she is undergoing treatment at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, and her condition is stated to be critical.
“The incident occurred after she visited her boyfriend’s rented house at Jwala Heri village at around 10 am,” a police officer said. Her boyfriend, Pankaj, hails from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district and works with a private firm in Gurgaon. The woman came to meet Pankaj on Monday morning, but he was not at home.
“The woman later jumped from the third floor of the building and sustained severe injuries,” the officer added. A neighbour informed police, after which the woman was rushed DDU Hospital. It is claimed that the couple has been in a relationship for the past four years.
Police also said the woman was frequently visiting Pankaj’s house since Saturday and was pressurising Pankaj for marriage. Pankaj’s continuous denial, however, led to the woman taking the extreme step.
The woman and Pankaj were earlier neighbours at Swaroop Nagar, where they became friends and later entered into a relationship. Sources said the woman was pressurising Pankaj for marriage because of his philandering nature.
It is claimed that Pankaj was in contact with several women which was objected to by the woman. The woman was depressed as she was unable to get Pankaj’s commitment to marriage. A team from Paschim Vihar police station have informed the woman’s family and questioned Pankaj.
