Kohli, Gambhir reprimanded for spat

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, captains respectively of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, squared off in an ugly mid-field spat on Thursday night during their IPL encounter that forced match referee David Boon to reprimand the two for violating the code of conduct.

The incident occurred in the 10th over of the Royal Challengers’ chase when Kohli was dismissed by L Balaji, caught by Eoin Morgan deep on the off. As Gambhir ran past his rival number towards the bowler, he appeared to have said something provocative. Kohli, who was on his way to the pavilion, stood in his track, uttering a few words to Gambhir. Cutting off the celebrations, the left-hander then charged towards Kohli and before things could turn uglier, Rajat Bhatia, the duo’s long-time Delhi team-mate, intervened and Kohli walked back to the dug-out shaking his head in disapproval.

The behaviour, understandably, didn’t go down well with Boon who charged the two skippers of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct and consequently warned and reprimanded them. “Both Mr. Kohli and Mr. Gambhir admitted to the Level 1 offence (Article 2.1.4) of using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during the match. For Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” said an IPL release.

The two sparring players played down the incident but there was hardly any sign of warmth between them when they shook hands at the end of the match. While Kohli maintained “what’s done on the field is done,” Gambhir felt such things happen in the ‘heat of the moment.’

“Absolutely,” he remarked when asked if the issue was over between him and Kohli. “Cricket is a man’s game and not played by the boys. It’s played the hard way and with the hard ball and these things happen in the heat of the moment. You don’t need to carry it outside,” said Gambhir who was booed by the crowd during the presentation ceremony.
