An elderly couple was found murdered in Lucknow late on Sunday. The bodies of Rakesh Narayan Mehra, 61, and his wife Lata, 59, were found in a pool of blood when police broke into the house, an official said.

Police were alerted by neighbours, whom the daughter of the couple had called over telephone from Delhi after repeated calls to her parents went unanswered.

Mehra had retired from Dena Bank as a cashier in 2012, and his wife worked as a labour enforcement officer in Barabanki.

When police entered the house, they found blood spattered all around. Mehra’s body was on the floor near a dining table, and his wife’s body was on a sofa in the living room.

Police said prima facie it appeared to be an attempted robbery. There were signs of physical resistance by the couple, as the intruders may have tried to overpower them.
Some valuables were found strewn around. The couple was last seen taking a walk with their pet dog at 9 pm on Sunday. Police found the pet locked in a room.

Mehra was stabbed 16 times, and his wife suffered 28 deep wounds and gashes, police said. “These are clear signs of a brutal attack. Kitchen knives used in the attack were found broken,” said a policeman.

The couple is survived by a daughter, Gunjan, who works in Delhi.
