Process spread over entire year, parents on their toes

Schools affiliated to CISCE and CBSE do not have guidelines regarding issue of applications. However, they are directed by the Government to adhere to admission norms. The admissions are scheduled to be conducted in April each year.

Margaret Eastwood, Convener, Forum of ICSE schools, Bangalore, said that applications are issued by individual schools over different slots throughout the year. “Some schools issue applications in January or February. But all ICSE schools have been directed to conduct admissions in April each year and schools strictly adhere to the government’s direction.”

The State has no control over the private educational institutions which are affiliated to different boards.

Parents are a worried lot as they have to keep track of the best schools as and when they commence admission process. Suchitra Sen, a parent, said that she had already enquired with an international school in the City for nursery admissions for her four-year-old son.  “Going by an advertisement in one of the dailies about applications being issued by this international school, we had to rush to school to get the prospectus and application for nursery. Various ICSE and CBSE schools issue applications by the end of the year, beginning from October to January. So parents are constantly on their toes to get the applications,”  she said.

Guidelines issued

However, schools affiliated to the State Board have a calendar of events regarding the admissions and examinations.

Dr R G Nadadur, Principal Secretary, Primary and Secondary Education Department, said “A set of guidelines were issued to the State schools regarding the admissions and examinations. A circular too was sent to schools a few years ago in  this behalf, which is being followed by all schools”.

Several committees have been constituted for implementation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. A committee has also been formed to form guidelines on the role of state government in all the educational institutions vis-a-vis CBSE and ICSE schools.

The outcome of the deliberations of the committee will  bestow powers on the State government regarding recognition of the educational institutions affiliated to other boards.
