Varun may contest from Sultanpur in 2014 LS polls

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Varun Gandhi may contest from Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh in the next Parliamentary elections.

If the sources in the state BJP are to be believed, Varun, who currently represents Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat, could shift to Sultanpur in 2014 polls.

An indication to this effect was also dropped by the Sultanpur district BJP leaders though they maintain that the final decision could be taken by the party high command.
Varun Gandhi will be addressing a public meeting in the district on May 16, the BJP leaders said.

“As far as we know Varun is going to contest from Sultanpur,” said a senior district leader.

BJP leaders said they had been busy making preparations for Varun’s entry into Lok Sabha from the seat for the past six months.

“We have been visiting different parts of the constituency and meeting people and gauging their mood,” the leaders said.

“The people of Sultanpur have for a long time demanding that a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family be fielded from here. Their demand will be met if Varun contests from here,” said the leaders.

Incidentally, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi Lok Sabha seat falls under Sultanpur district. Amethi had been made a separate district but the state government’s notification to this effect had recently been quashed by the High Court.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Raebareli Lok Sabha seat lies in the neighbourhood of Sultanpur.

Tough road ahead

Though Varun had romped home from Pilibhit seat in 2009 polls by a huge margin, BJP leaders here feel that he might find going tough this time as there might not be a polarisation.

Varun had been booked for allegedly giving inflammatory speech at Pilibhit. The then Mayawati regime had even slapped the National Security Act on him.
However, he was acquitted in both cases registered against him in this regard.
