Aashiqui 2 movie review: Love? It's a liquor story

Aashiqui 2
Hindi (U)*
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor
Director: Mohit Suri

Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor are two lovers so “stiff” with pain that one wants to shake them up into saving their lives and the movie (and the viewer’s time).

As the story progresses, Aditya sheds some wood. Good. But Shraddha takes her role of an all-suppressing human way too seriously that even her “acting” fails to show up. And after a point, her save-me-I’m-so-naive look appears funny. Not to Aditya, who gives the bar crooner a break.

A singing sensation himself, Aditya has some voice lessons in handy for the raw talent he discovered. “Classes” progress, eyelashes flutter, lips lock and it’s full-blown love.
Now, it’s downfall time for Aditya, thanks to the tonnes of drinks he downs. Several fights with organisers and journalists later, Aditya finally announces that things are going to change. Because, ahem, he is going to join a gym. Perhaps, a de-addiction centre would have helped.

Aashiqui 2 fails for several reasons. First, it’s too syrupy for today’s to-the-point crowd. Second, it doesn’t look like a love story at all as all the problems are “bottled up” in Aditya’s liquor cabinet. Third, it treads the familiar Abhimaan path, where egos clash on the professional front.

The original Aashiqui rode high on its music. Sad, songs too fail Aashiqui 2.
