BJP's moves on JPC lure third front

BJP's moves on JPC lure third front

A broad consensus among the Opposition to expose the Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 2G P C Chacko, party leaders believe, is helping the BJP to build public perception that it is pivotal in galvanising an  anti-Congress alliance on corruption issues.

For that to happen, said a senior party leader, the BJP strategically took a step back and supported the move to meet Speaker Meira Kumar, instead of leading the opposition parties, which included the third front.

The demand for Chacko’s ouster on the grounds that he had lost faith of majority of the members over the manner in which he was conducting himself, has united the opposition.

The BJP decided to play second fiddle, party sources said, so that third front partners such as the Left parties, the BJD and the DMK could not be weaned away by raising the communal tag perennially attached to the party. A meeting of JPC members took place at a BJD office to formalise the strategy of cornering the UPA on the report.
