K R Nagar or Krishnaraja Nagar was established seven and half decades ago, when the Krishnaraja Reservoir was constructed, which has benefitted agricultural activities in the region substantially. <br /><br /></p>.<p>However, the prevailing drought has affected its productivity in the last few months. With four days left for the Assembly elections, it is yet unclear that who would emerge victorious in the polls. Though there is a close competition between Congress and JD(S), the KJP candidate is said to play an important role in the outcome of the elections.<br /><br />Caste equation<br /><br />The constituency has a large population of Vokkaligas and Kurubas. There are two candidates from Vokkaliga community in the fray; Mahesh and K N Basanth of KJP respectively. Mahesh, who had won in 2008, had a large portion of Vokkaligas voting in his favour. But, with K N Basanth in the fray, Mahesh has risks of division in the Vokkaliga votes.<br /><br />Doddaswamegowda is from the Kuruba community. Since, opposition leader Siddaramaiah is a Kuruba, Congress is hoping a large portion of the community votes. <br />Votes of Lingayat and SC/ST’s too are of added importance due to the fracture in Vokkaliga votes. Though Lingayats are expected to be inclined towards KJP, individual voter preferences have left all the candidates unclear about their fate, despite keen contest between Congress and JD(S).<br /><br />The constituency has seen some development in the past few years. Ramasamudra Canal, which will increase the availability of water to a constituency famous for paddy cultivation is nearing completion. The Mini Vidhana Soudha and the community halls have been completed.<br /><br />However, electricity shortage has affected the farmers in the region. Connectivity to interior areas of the district remains unsatisfactory. <br /><br />In the run up to the elections, all political parties are rumoured to have actively involved in bribing the voters.
