Aliya hopes to shine in Chile

The 20-year-old Aliya, who is the lone Indian rider to get the nod for the meet, qualified from Zone 9 (South and South East Asia) after winning the national-level FEI Showjumping Challenge last November in Bangalore.

“It will be an extremely tough competition but I relish such challenges. I feel a little nervous because it is my first meet on the world stage. I just want to go out there and perform to my potential,” said Aliya, who will leave for Chile on Friday.

Aliya, who trains at the Equestrian Centre for Excellence at the Palace Grounds, had triumphed in the CSI Y International event two years back in Kolkata and also won the FEI Showjumping Challenge in the same year when it was held in Bangalore.

Aliya, however, will not be able to ride her favourite horse Hannibal in Santiago, as the riders are not allowed to bring in their horses.

“We have to borrow horses from there (Santiago), so the first thing for me after reaching there is to try and get a good horse,” said Aliya.

Aliya will be joined by Indonesia’s Reshwara Radinal from Zone 9. Sixteen riders from nine countries will vie for top honours in four rounds in the individual and team categories. Top riders, including hosts’ Nunil Castro Martinez, Spain’s Monach Hechme and South African McCall will compete in the meet.
