Many teachers to be spared from shifts in remote areas

Alarmed by the sharp rise in crime against the women, the Uttar Pradesh basic education department has decided to post women  teachers only in government primary schools which are connected by road.

According to department officials, women teachers who get postings in schools situated in remote areas, far from the roads, not only face a lot of problems but also feel unsafe.
“It has been decided that women teachers will be posted at schools that are situated on the side of roads,” an official said.

Officials said postings at roadside schools would instil a sense of security among women teachers and also reduce absenteeism. They added that a large number of women teachers had complained that they felt ‘insecure’ when they got posted at schools in far-flung areas.

Directive soon

Sources said that a directive to this effect would soon be sent to the district basic education officers.

Officials said women teachers who are currently posted in remote areas will be adjusted in schools situated by the road and positions vacated by them filled by male teachers.

The list of primary schools connected by road will also be uploaded on the website of the department and will also kept at the offices of basic education officers in the districts, officials said.

Crime against women

Though officials denied that the decision had anything do with the recent surge in crimes against women in the state, sources in the department said that it had weighed heavily on their minds.

Incidents of crimes against women in the state have risen sharply during the past one year.
