Sharmila makes first cut of season

Indian golfer Sharmila Nicollet made her first cut of the season after carding a two-over 75 in the second round of the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open here.

Nicollet, who has been recovering from injury and erratic form, made the cut despite a double bogey and a bogey on 16th and 17th hole on Friday.

She is now three-over 149 at the National Golf Club par-73 course. The cut fell at six-over 152. Nicollet, who had three birdies and four bogeys in the first round, had two birdies and an eagle in the second against four bogeys and a double bogey.

Long-hitting Nicollet made good use of the distance she manages off the tee and the eagle on 14th helped her cause.

Meanwhile, Laura Davies, Trish Johnson and Carmen Alonso shared the halfway lead. The trio sit at four-under par after 36 holes played in sunny conditions.

Chadha loses

Defending champion Abhijit Singh Chadha faltered in the play-off as local favourite Shivaram Shrestha lifted the 20th Surya Nepal Masters golf tournament at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Beginning three shots behind Chadha (70), the Nepali No 1 fought his way in contention and scripted a fairytale victory with a superlative effort of five-under 67 on the final day to force a play-off before prevailing on the first extra hole (18th) with a birdie.

The play-off was necessitated after both the players had finished with a tournament total of 18-under 270.

Meanwhile, Asian Tour star Anirban Lahiri made a brilliant charge but faltered in the final holes to finish third at 17-under. Mukesh Kumar and Ajeetesh Sandhu were tied for the fourth place at 274. Rahul Bajal and Md Dulal Hossain shared the sixth position at 276.
