AI lowers free baggage allowance

Last Updated 11 May 2013, 21:00 IST

Air India (AI) on Saturday made a small revision lowering the free baggage allowance to 20 kg on its domestic flights. A flat rate of Rs 250 per kg will now be charged for baggage beyond the limit.

Accordingly, the free baggage allowance in the top four fare levels of economy class will be 20 kg and for all other levels it will be 15 kg, an AI statement said.
Meanwhile, the free baggage allowance for a business class passenger remains unchanged at 35 kg, it added.

The revised baggage allowance will be applicable on tickets issued on or after May 13. Tickets issued prior to this date will be honoured as per the earlier baggage allowance.

Air India sources had last week said that it would lower the free baggage allowance from 20 to 15 kg on the domestic sector and start charging a flat rate of about Rs 200-250 per kg on excess baggage. However, in the final decision, the 20 kg limit for certain levels of economy class has been retained.

The decision follows a Directorate General of Civil Aviation circular last month allowing the airlines to charge fees for “unbundled services” like check-in baggage, preferential seats, meals, snacks or drink (barring drinking water) and sports and musical instruments, on their domestic flights.
