UP cops again 'misbehave' with woman

The Uttar Pradesh police have apparently not mended ways despite being rapped by the Supreme Court for ill-treating women.

A 30-year-old woman from Delhi was on Monday slapped by a woman constable in plain clothes inside a police station in Sahibabad, a few kilometres from the national capital, after she was caught along with a youth for allegedly creating “nuisance” in an inebriated state.
The woman also hit back as TV footage showed her pushing the cop before being overpowered by other policemen.

“The woman and her companion were drunk. They also misbehaved with the public and used filthy language. They were then brought to the police station and booked under relevant sections of the IPC,” said a senior police officer. A medical test has confirmed that the duo consumed alcohol. The woman, however, claimed that the cops had misbehaved with her.

The incident has incurred the wrath of social activists and opposition parties. This is not a stray incident since cops in Uttar Pradesh were found on the wrong foot while dealing with women complainants earlier as well. Barely a few days ago, a senior police officer turned away a rape victim in her mid-30s and refused to lodge a complaint, saying that she was “too old to be raped.”
