Design Contest

Tata Elxsi has announced the launch of the second edition of Ignite Design Contest.
The contest aims to encourage young budding designers to enable change through design.

This year’s theme ‘Design enriching everyday life’ has been aligned to the theme set by International council of societies of industrial design (ICSID)’.

The theme intends to convey the growing recognition of the importance of design across industries and how it can help brands and companies solve day-to-day problems to gain a competitive edge in the market place.

Design students pursuing their full-time UG and PG courses in Product and Visual Design (Branding, Graphic Design and UI) in India can participate in this contest.

Applicants can submit their entries in two areas - Age-friendly Kitchen Appliances for the elderly and Re-defining a Smart TV.

 Two winners (one each from Product and Visual Design) would get a chance to work on a live project in the Tata Elxsi Design Studio in Bangalore, for a period of three months with a paid stipend. In addition, each winner will be awarded cash prizes of Rs. 30,000 along with a winner’s certificate.

The winners will also get to present their idea / concept to the panelists and audience at the 2013 connect D event which will be attended by industry and academic experts associated with design. Design students should submit their entries by June 15, 2013.

Top innovators

The innovation by Suryansh Saxena, a student Innovator from the Delhi Technology University (DTU) was amongst the top 30 winners of the DST - Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme 2013.

Together with his Mentor, Aakash Sinha, Suryansh has developed a light weight Unmanned Drone.

This portable robotic drone has a day and night surveillance camera and can be controlled from a distance of 15 km.

Innovation of another Saxena i.e Sidhyansh Saxena (IIT), along with his mentor, Nandagopalan, is Nanner - a revolutionary herbal technology for Water Management and Water Purification that aims to provide a complete solution for all water related problems.

The technology can be effectively used for enhancing the micro flora of the water body which will provide good and clean water, thus enhancing good living condition for the aqua world.

Another IIT, Madras student innovator Tarun Kumar Mishra, got this award as he developed a detection technology that monitors pipelines that carry hot chemicals and fluids, in addition to normal pipelines.

It uses a special material to generate ultrasonic guided waves within any material, especially long pipelines. This traveling wave can detect any defect which comes along in its way.

The programme received almost 1000 applications from sectors as diverse as clean energy, agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, robotics, and others.
Fifty technologies were down-selected in the initial phase.

These innovators were given week-long advanced training in principles of product commercialization, readiness for market, business models, IP rights, competitive positioning, and mechanisms for revenue by experienced faculty members from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Workshop on Phonetics

KLES’s Institute of Faculty Development (IFD) is beginning its 3-week Spoken English Classes from May, 2013.

The course is open from May 20The course is open to all aged 18 and above who aspire to learn good communicative skills .

This program will focus on four main aspects of learning a language LSRW i.e listening , speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis would be on speaking as it is the need of the hour.

IFD will also be conducting a workshop on phonetics for two days in the month of May, 2013.The focus of the phonetics program is on: How are speech sounds made? What types of movements and configurations of the vocal tract, tongue are used to produce sounds in the English language.

Accent neutralization, reduction of  MTI and vocabulary building are some of the key elements of the program. All sessions will consist of practice and activities. For registration and enquiries contact: 0831-2420106.

Karnataka students at ISEF 2012

Three of India’s next generation innovators from Karnataka will represent the nation at the 2013 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Phoenix, Arizona from May 12 to 7, 2013.

These are Yeshwanth Mahesh from Citizens High school, Bangalore along with Nayana Ravindranath Koravatti and Aishwarya C A from Amrita Vidyalayam, Davangere who have made the entire nation proud by being amongst approximately 1600 finalists from across the globe to be a part of the world’s largest pre-college science fair, and the only global science competition for students in grades 8-12.

Intel ISEF is a program run by the Society for Science & the Public (SSP) in partnership with Intel Corporation. The premier global science competition provides an annual forum to pre-college students across the world to display their independent research.

Bringing together more than 1600 young students from more than 70 countries, Inte ISEF 2013 is an opportunity for the best young minds in the world to come together to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge projects, and compete for more than US $3 million in awards and scholarships.
