A walk down memory lane

It’s not a very common sight these days to see people attending a gig with a band doing only covers. To see them enjoying the same is an even rarer sight.

As part of a series of events called ‘BFlat Classic Nights’, the debut gig by ‘Classic Wild’ held recently at Bflat, was proof to this.

An evening of genres like blues, classic rock and funk, it spanned a variety of songs from the 70s to the 90s — going from the rock anthems to the cheesy ballads.

The members were all veterans from the Bangalore music scene, each one adept at their own instrument.

The band featured Sanjay Chandrakanth on guitar, Vineesh Venugopal on vocals, Raj Sampath on drums, Gerard Roy on bass and Danny Jakes on keyboard.

An interesting element was added when the guest artiste, Arati Rao, was called on to join in for a few songs like ‘The Sensitive Kind’ by ‘Santana’ and ‘Josie’ by ‘Steely Dan’.
The selection of songs was rather interesting as it featured both the popular and lesser known songs by bands like ‘Dire Straits’, ‘Deep Purple’, ‘Whitesnake’, ‘The Scorpions’, ‘Van Halen’ and ‘Queen’ as well as musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Gary Moore. Whether planned or otherwise, the members even seem attired to give the old school feel.

“It was pretty damn good, especially because it’s the kind of music that I like. They did
a decent job of the covers – some were really good while others were okay. But overall, it’s been an enjoyable evening,” says Kuleena, an audience member.

For the band too, it was an unforgettable evening. “It was a good turnout and the
response was overwhelming given the rains and the fact that it was a Sunday night. Music from the 70s to 90s era is our focus and as a band, we wanted to have a set that went with the vibe of BFlat. We knew the crowd profile and chose songs that suited them and fit of the theme of ‘classic nights’,” shares Sanjay Chandrakanth, the lead guitarist.
