A total number of 805 police personnel in various hierarchical designations under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police are in-charge of the security in the district. However, the department falls short of as many as 118 staff as per the sanctioned strength.

Superintendent of Police Dr Boralingaiah M B told Deccan Herald that there are 10 head police constables and 108 police constable posts vacant as per the sanctioned strength of police force in the district. However, the police constables can be promoted as head police constables following which the department will have additional police constables positions falling vacant, he added.

Out of 805 police staff in the district, there are a many as 3 DySPs, 9 CPIs, 31 PIs, 70 PSIs/SIs, 193 HCs/PCs and around 499 police personnel.

There are nearly 22 police stations and one railway police station in 3,879 square meters of areas comprising three taluks of the district. These 22 police stations also include one police station exclusively for women. The police personnel in the district can be roughly calculated in the ratio of 68 for one lakh population. The government policy recommends 200 police personnel per one lakh population.

The SP said that a proposal has been sent to the government demanding for augmentation of staff in the police stations covering Maoists infested areas. He said besides there is also the need of enhancement of staff in most of the police stations to handle security aspects in a much easier approach.  There is necessity of augmenting the staff in Udupi town police station, traffic police stations, Manipal police station, Kundapur police station and Karkala police station. These are the stations that are always bombarded with huge burden of work and the department needs enough number of human resources to handle the emergencies.

The police stations in the district are all equipped with basic infrastructural facilities. Almost all police stations are upgraded with computers and other facilities. The new structures have replaced the old structures and the police stations in the remote areas are also equipped with necessary infrastructural facilities.

The SP added that if the government sanctions additional staff to the department, the department can offer security service with sophisticated approach. However, the department deals with law and order mechanism with available number of force and tries the best to provide safe environment with no crimes reported anywhere in the district.
