Inspired by a legendary actress

Sonam Kapoor has a lot on her plate right now and she’s leaving no stone
unturned to ensure that she makes the most of her opportunities. The actress, who seems to be in the headlines more for her edgy fashion sense than her skills in front of the camera, seems to be keen to overturn this image — and she’s all set to do so with her upcoming film, Raanjhaana, in which she stars opposite Dhanush of Why This Kolaveri? fame.

Sonam plays a schoolgirl in the movie and admits that she took inspiration from one of the most talented actresses in the film fraternity — Jaya Bachchan. Jaya played
the role of a school-going teenager in the movie Guddi, and Sonam turned to that character to get a few tips to make her performance more realistic.

“I had already seen Guddi but I saw it again before shooting for the film,” she says. “I was inspired by Jaya Bachchan ji in Guddi for the film.”

Shooting for Raanjhaana, was like actualising unfulfilled dreams for the 27-year-old, who claims that she studied in a “very conservative school” in real life. “I was not allowed to wear short skirts (when I was in school), but with this film, I enjoyed a lot. I wore short skirts, had fun with boys and did everything that I couldn’t do in my school days,” she adds.

Another reason that movie-goers are excited to watch this film is that its lead actor Dhanush has dubbed for himself for his debut Hindi movie. It wasn’t easy for the actor, whose mother-tongue isn’t Hindi, but he says, “I give credit to the director of the film, Anand. He prepared me to play the Benarasi guy. I have dubbed myself for the film. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Raanjhaana is slated for a June 21 release.

Hunting for a leading lady

Shunning the remake culture, producer Vashu Bhagnani is moving ahead with a fresh story in his new venture, Humshakal and says that the Saif Ali Khan-Riteish Deshmukh starrer will go on the floors in August.

His last co-production, Himmatwala was a remake, which failed to enthuse the box office. Confirming the details about Humshakal, Bhagnani says, “I am making Humshakal.
It’s a fresh film and not a remake. The film will be directed by Sajid Khan and it will have Saif and Riteish in the lead. The film will go on the floors by August.”

“We have not yet finalised the leading lady — once we finalise the leading lady, we shall make an official announcement,” he adds.

Meanwhile, the film-maker is also planning some new film for his son Jackky, whose F.A.L.T.U and Rangrezz bombed at the box office. “We are planning something for Jackky as well but it’s too early to disclose anything right now. Just give us some time and we will make an official announcement,” he adds.

Ranbir’s not so brave after all!

What is Ranbir Kapoor scared of? According to his ex-flame, Deepika Padukone, the answer is simple: spiders and cockroaches. She goes on to assert that she knows this through experience.

“Experience! He gets scared of a spider (sic),” says Deepika. “If you are in a room and if there is a spider or a cockroach, rest assured, everyone else will be running behind it to shoo it away and Ranbir will be hiding under the bed,” the 27-year-old admits.

After the 2008 release Bachna Ae Haseeno, the Ayan Mukerji directed Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, releasing on May 31, is their second film together and the first after their patch-up.

New project in the pipeline

There’s been a lot of speculation about whether Emraan Hashmi — protege of the Bhatt brothers — is planning on starring in a film produced by their banner. But it seems that the
actor has finally decided; he will be starring in the film, called ‘Invisible’.

A source close to the project explains, “Emraan shares the kind of rapport with Mahesh Bhatt, where Bhatt sahab only has to ask, and Emraan would do the film. But the Bhatts have never believed in mixing professional and personal relations. If they did, they would’ve launched Bhatt sahab’s son Rahul long ago. Every actor who works with Vishesh Films is free to choose the projects he or she wants. And that goes for Emraan as well.”

Confirming that the project with his nephew Emraan is titled ‘Invisible’, Mahesh Bhatt says, “Emraan is starring in our next mega-project entitled ‘Invisible’, which Vikram Bhatt will direct. It’s an original story written by Shagufta Rafique and Vikram Bhatt.”

Vikram adds, “‘Invisible’ would be an entirely new optical and emotional experience for the audience.”
