A one-year-old girl drowned in a pit at a construction site where her parents were employed as labourers, in Chowdaiah Layout, Abbigere, on Monday.

They were living in a makeshift shed near the construction site.

On Monday, while Lingaraju was working on the second floor, Devamma bathed the girl and let her play in the shed at about 12:30 pm. Devamma, who was busy preparing lunch, could not find the baby after about 15 minutes.

As she went in search of her daughter, the girl was found in a small pit. Though she was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, the child was declared brought dead.

The one-foot-deep pit is located adjacent to the building at the mouth of a water pipe from the terrace. The baby fell headside down and died of asphyxiation as her face was immersed in water, police said. Gangammanagudi police have registered a case of unnatural death.
