22 schools await green signal to start English medium

The scheme was only implemented in two govt schools last year

Undeterred by the failure of attempts to introduce English as medium of instruction for Class 6 and 7 in government schools in Dakshina Kannada district last year, the authorities concerned are sending more proposals for the coming academic year.

The officials said though 35 proposals were sent last year, only two could actually implement the scheme as text books arrived late.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Nodal Officer (Textbook) Shankarappa Mudnal said that the Department of Public Instruction Commissioner had already approved 35 proposals for starting English as medium of instruction. Of them, 14 applications were from Mangalore taluk, six each from Sullia and Belthangady, four from Puttur, three from Moodbidri and two from Bantwal.

“This year we have sent another 22 proposals— 15 from Mangalore, 5 from Moodbidri and one each from Bantwal and Puttur. We will send 12 more, including six pending from last year, making it a total of 69 in two years,” Mudnal said.

‘Textbooks will be in time’

District Deputy Director of Public Instructions (DDPI) Moses Jayashekar said that last year only two government schools in Moodbidri implemented the programme.

“This year the indent has been sent in advance and students will get textbooks in time. The textbook formulation committee has promised to supply required number of books. Three subjects, excluding language,  will be taught in English and nearly 3570 books  will be required,” he said.

Jayashekar said that the department has no powers to extend more facility to schools to introduce the scheme.

“There is no proposal to appoint teaching staff and schools will have to manage with existing manpower. The SDMCs should make some arrangements. I hope that schools can manage as they have to teach mathematics, social science and science in English besides  three languages,” he told Deccan Herald.

English medium schools

Meanwhile, 13 aided and unaided schools in the district have got permission to introduce English medium for 2013- 14.

From Bantwal taluk five schools have got permission, while four from Mangalore, two from Moodbidri and one each from Puttur and Belthangady have got the nod.  For a query on criterion for rejecting applications, the official said “There should not be any school within one km radius. So far, 13 proposals have been rejected.”
