In yet another honour killing in Uttar Pradesh, a youth was allegedly thrown into a well and left to die after he was caught with his lover by the latter’s family members.

The youth, whose hands and legs were tied with rope before being thrown into the dry well, died a little later, according to reports. The incident occurred at Majre Sudamapur village in the state’s Raebareli district, about 90 kilometers from here, on Monday.

Sources said that the victim, identified as Sandeep Pal, was having an affair with a girl who also hailed from the same village, for the past few months. On Monday, the girl left her home in the wee hours to meet her lover. Unfortunately her parents woke up a little later and launched a search for her after not finding her on her bed, reports said.

The lovers were caught in a field just outside the village. While the girl was severely thrashed, the youth was tied with ropes and thrown into a nearby well that was dry.

The body that bore injury marks all over was recovered by the police who swung into action after the youth’s family members lodged a report, sources said.

A case has been registered and the father of the girl had been taken into custody in connection with the killing.

The police also confirmed that it was a case of honour killing. Despite all efforts, the incidents of honour killing have been rising in the state.

In the past, several youths in love have been hacked to death for the sake of family honour in the state. Only recently, a youth was killed by the brother of his lover more than 22 years of his marriage for the sake of family honour.

The powerful khap panchayats have already made it clear that they will not allow love marriages or marriages against the wishes of the family.
