‘I don’t agree with Mallika’

Former Miss World Priyanka Chopra condemned her fellow actress Mallika Sherawat for calling India a “regressive nation for women” on an international platform. Priyanka says that she is “highly offended” by the ‘Murder’ girl’s statement at the recently concluded 66th Cannes International Film Festival.

“I think we are a progressive nation. I disagree that we are a regressive nation. We are all sitting here and talking about educating the girl child, taking our country forward. I think it’s a misrepresentation of what our great nation is on the world platform,” says the
actress, in response to certain scathing remarks that Mallika made at the film festival. “It was something of which I felt extremely offended by (sic),” she adds.

Priyanka isn’t the only one annoyed by the statements; Mallika, who claimed to be the first Indian heroine to kiss on screen, drew a lot of flak for unfairly portraying India on
an international platform. She made these remarks during an interview, the link to which she later put up on Twitter. Calling Mallika’s statement an “extreme misrepresentation” of India, Priyanka says, “When it comes to Mallika’s statements, I think they were very callous and I don’t agree with her. It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don’t think it’s fair.” Hailing from a Jat family in Haryana, 36-year-old Mallika made her debut in Bollywood in 2003 with Khwaish.
Later, she went on to do international projects like Jackie Chan-starrer 2005 film ‘The Myth’, followed by Hisss and ‘Politics of Love’.

All praises for Preity

Preity Zinta’s debut production Ishkq in Paris, which released recently, has managed
to touch the hearts of film industry members like Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar.

Preity was delighted with their presence at the movie’s premiere.

A bevy of movie celebrities made it there for Preity, who has acted in the romantic film as well.

“I am very happy. I invited everyone whom I have worked with. Many of them were out of town or busy shooting, but it was very sweet of them to come even if it was for
a short while,” Preity says.

The premiere of the Prem Raj directorial also saw people like Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Kangana Ranaut, Dino Morea, film-maker Abhishek Kapoor and cricketer Zaheer Khan in attendance.

Javed Akhtar says, “I loved it. Rhehan (Malliek) and Preity have done a good job. The film is fresh.”

His wife Shabana adds, “It’s a very simple story but touches the heart. So, congratulations.”

Singer Sophie Choudry, who has sung a song titled ‘It’s All About Tonight’ in the movie, is happy for Preity.

“It takes a lot of guts for a girl to work with a newcomer. I am very happy for her. It’s a very beautiful and romantic story,” says Sophie, adding, “My reaction after watching the movie was ‘I think I need a boyfriend now!’.”

The story of a legend

Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh is all set with plans for his second production — a biopic titled ‘Pocket Dynamo’. It will be produced under his banner Mumbai Film Company (MFC). The film is based on the life of a wrestler Khashaba Jadhav, who won independent India’s first Olympic medal in 1952. Confirming the news through an official statement, Riteish says, “We have acquired the rights for the biopic based on Khashaba Jadhav’s life. I’m glad that Ranjit Jadhav deemed us worthy of giving his father’s story to be essayed on screen. He has quite a noteworthy journey and earned our country its first international medal but in time, his name and story was something that was lost. He is a hero who deserves to be remembered and honoured. We will work hard to do justice to the portrayal of his achievements.”

The script for the film, to be made and released in Marathi and Hindi, is currently being worked upon. The project will be co-produced by Line.exe productions. Riteish’s debut production was the Marathi film Balak Palak, which won him praises galore.
