JOIN USThe Supreme Court has allowed a plea to extend the time schedule for admission to MBBS and post-graduate courses in all medical colleges across the country till July 31.
A bench of Justices B S Chauhan and Dipak Misra passed the order by allowing a bunch of interlocutary applications, including the one filed by Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the purpose.
As per the court’s earlier directive, the admission had to be complete by May 31 but it became impossible in view of challenges made by some of the private medical colleges to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
In their plea, all of the applicants urged the court to revise the time schedule for counselling/admission in terms of its letter issued by the MCI on May 22 for the academic year 2013-14. “Having heard learned counsel for the parties and upon perusal of the earlier orders passed by the court and the letter dated 22.05.2013, the time schedule is extended to 31.07.2013 for all purposes.”
“Needless to say, it would be obligatory on the part of the MCI to transfer the seats from the central quota to the respective states much in advance to avoid any kind of confusion and further the revised schedule, as fixed by us, is maintained. This extension of time is applicable to the MBBS and their post-graduation courses restrictively for the academic year 2013- 14 only,” the bench said. In its interim order on May 13, the apex court had cleared the decks for admission of students to post-graduate and under-graduate MBBS and BDS courses in medical colleges across the country by lifting the bar on declaration of results for entrance examinations.A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir modified its December 13 order, paving the way for announcement of results of the NEET introduced by the Medical Council of India for admission to post-graduate and under-graduate courses.
The court, however, had said its judgment on the validity of the NEET would be passed in July.
