Overflowing manholes worsen rain woes

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room numbers have been flooded with calls from the public related to drainage water inundating their homes and trees being uprooted in the past two days.

“About 33 trees were uprooted on Saturday in several places of the City and 34 calls relating to entry of drainage water into buildings were received. The callers were mostly from Nagashettihalli, Sanjaynagar, Banaswadi and Rajajinagar. We also received a complaint on Sunday about the overflowing manhole in 7th Main, JP Nagar,” said a BBMP helpline official.

Sudhamanagar was flooded and the stormwater drain (SWD) in the area, which is undergoing repair, added to the woes of the people on Friday and Saturday. The drainage water from the SWD entered the nearby Shantinagar bus depot, leaving many commuters and motorists stranded.

When BWSSB Engineer-in-Chief T V Venkataraju was contacted, he said, “Only managing the sewage lines, manholes and de-silting them comes under our jurisdiction. Every day, we get around 50 complaints relating to manholes and sewage lines. In the past one week, about 50 to 80 complaints were received by the BWSSB helpline each day, due to the rain. We are trying our best to address the woes of the public.”

Meanwhile, BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana inspected the rain-affected areas on Sunday.

Due to the heavy rains that lashed the City in the past two days, the huge SWD in Ganesh Mandir ward, coming under Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency, got damaged. The sidewall of the SWD, about 30 metres tall, collapsed due to the rain.
The Commissioner ordered the chief engineers of the ward to start the work of restoring the sidewall in two days so that the public are not affected.

On seeing the damaged SWDs in Ward No 163, the Commissioner instructed the officials concerned to take precautionary measures to prevent the clogging of drains and damage to SWDs. MLA R Ashok and corporator Govindaraju were also present during the inspection.
