Students and teachers from various universities who went for candlelight vigil at India Gate demanding roll back of four year graduation to be implemented in Delhi University from this academic session were detained at Parliament Street police station on Monday.

“We were sloganeering at India Gate. We were carrying placards on the four-year graduation. A police bus came and took around 20-30 protesters away. Then the police officials started snatching placards and candles from us. They tore the placards. And when we resisted, the officials shoved the protesters inside the buses. They ripped our shirts  apart and pulled us by hair,” said one of the detained students.

Around 70-80 demonstrators were detained, tells the student. “Now the sloganeering is happening inside the police station. We understand that section 144 is enforced but the way they treat unarmed protesters is shocking and condemning,” said the student.
There are 10 children also among the detainees.

“Due to law and order situation at India Gate, we asked the protesters to continue their protest at Jantar Mantar but they refused. Seventy five persons have been detained,” said the official.
