'Harassed' by relatives, three women seek permission for euthanasia

An 80-year-old woman and her two daughters have petitioned the government, seeking permission for euthanasia. The trio have decided to end their lives, as they are “unable to bear the torture of relatives over ownership of a piece of land.”

Mayamma and her daughters Jayamma, 40 and Savitri, 30, from Devarahalli in Bilikere hobli, Hunsur taluk in the district submitted a memorandum in this regard to Additional Deputy Commissioner Naga Nayak on Tuesday. Nayak, who ‘reluctantly’ received the memorandum, asked them to come later.

A few days ago, Mayamma, her daughters and  grandchildren were assaulted by her husband’s nephews.

Ravi, son of Jayamma, the elder daughter of Mayamma and late Karigowda, told Deccan Herald that Rajegowda and Anande Gowda (sons of Hanumanthe Gowda, the elder brother of Karigowda) had usurped 40 guntas of land which belonged to his grandfather.

Ravi said that the right to tenancy certificate (RTC) was in the name of his grandfather, until his death in 1996.

Land usurped

However, in 2000, Rajegowda succeeded in obtaining a khata for 30 guntas of land in his name, claiming himself as being the son of Karigowda, who in reality is his uncle. Similarly, Anande Gowda “dubiously” owns 10 guntas of land.

Recently, Savitri petitioned the assistant commissioner of Hunsur in this regard. Earlier, a local court had ruled in favour of Savitri in the land dispute case.

It is hearing another petition pertaining to 10 guntas of land.
