The number of gold medals awarded to students at Bangalore University convocation will go up this year with the university deciding to award toppers in all departments.

“There are several gold medals instituted in the university’s name. Along with these, from this year, the university will award medals to toppers in all departments,” said Vice-Chancellor Prof B Thimme Gowda. The decision was taken at the Syndicate meeting held on Tuesday. With this, the university will be giving away around 75 extra gold medals, for both under graduate and postgraduate courses. Briefing reporters, Prof Thimme Gowda said the members also shortlisted eight illustrious people for honorary doctorates.

About three or four names will be finalised. The varsity has also received permission to appoint a legal advisor. A three-member panel has been chosen by the High Court registrar. Within the next few days, the legal advisor will be selected, Prof Gowda said. BU has also agreed to give an acre to build a fire station on the premises.

A proposal for the same had been sent by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The fire station will come up at the Mysore Road-Jnanabharathi Junction.
