Puneeth, Poojitha champs

Puneeth, seeded seventh, who upset third seed Premchander in his semifinal match and second seed local favourite VP Charan in the quarterfinals, registered a hard-fought 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9 win against Shreyal.

It was Shreyal’s second loss in the title round in as many days as he on Saturday went down to Suraj D in the sub-junior final.  Shreyal, who moved into the final round following a comfortable win against fourth-seeded Vedanth Urs in the semis earlier in the day, lost the first game 9-11 but crawled back to grab the second game 11-7.
However, the Sree Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College student, Puneeth, took the third and fourth games pretty easily to race to a 3-1 lead.
Needing to win the fifth game to stay in the match, Shreyal put up a brave show to narrow the deficit to 3-2 by winning the fifth game at 11-8 and then won the sixth game as well to level the scores.

In the decider, fortunes swung on either sides before Puneeth held on to the nerves to clinch the game and the title.

Top-seeded Poojitha N of Mount Carmel College outclassed second seed Subhashree of Sports Authority of India 11-6, 13-11, 11-8, 12-10 to pocket the junior girls’ crown.
