Gauri opens up slender advantage

Delhi’s Gauri Monga dished out a second successive one-over 73 to inch ahead of a jam-packed leaderboard after the penultimate round of the Usha-IGU Southern India Ladies and Junior Girls Golf Championship here on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, who seized sole lead following a brilliant 25-footer birdie putt on the closing 18th hole, holds a one-shot advantage with a two-round total of 146 at the Karnataka Golf Association.

Gursimar Badwal and Tvesa Malik matched Gauri’s card --  the day’s best score -- to rise to joint second while overnight leader Astha Madan shot a disappointing four-over 76 to slip to joint fourth along with Raksha Phadke at 148.

Title favourite and Order of Merit leader Gurbani Singh kept herself in contention, shooting 74 to stay within three shots of Gauri. Local hope Aditi Ashok endured a rare bad day in the office, hitting a double-bogey filled 80.

One of the promising amateurs a couple of years back, Gauri has been off the radar since last season. Having made a comeback this year following a small stint in the United Sates, the youngster has been making a steady improvement which was evident on a cloudy Tuesday.

Her front nine was ordinary, dropping bogeys on the second and ninth holes. She then played steady golf on the inward journey, parring eight holes before nailing a fine birdie on the 18th to nose ahead.
