Two woman labourers killed in wall collapse in City

Two woman labourers of a family of nine, engaged at a residential complex under construction, were killed when the compound wall of an adjacent site collapsed on them at Kengeri here on Tuesday afternoon.

The victims were trapped in the basement of the complex in Dharma Somashekar Layout.
The deceased, Rajakka, 40, and Mangamma, 20, were married to brothers Mareppa and Basavaraj respectively. The husbands were also working on the same site but quickly moved away when they saw a mud mass and the wall caving in.

Though the trapped women were pulled out of the debris by other workers, the two were already dead.

Sri Sai Venkateshwara Constructions had bagged the contract to build a four-storey residential complex from owner Balaji. The basement and ground floor were complete and work was on.

Due to incessant rain, the earth below the adjoining compound wall next to the basement 15 feet below the ground level, was loose. Some of the loose earth gave away, damaging the compound wall. To prevent any mishap, the site engineer had suggested building a boundary wall next to the cellar wall.

Labourers were hired to lay the foundation for the proposed wall. Nine members of one family arrived on Tuesday morning.

“We men were digging and our wives were removing the loose earth. Suddenly, we sensed some earth caving in and also saw the neighbouring compound wall crashing.

We screamed and jumped to safety but our wives did not have enough time to escape the cascading mud and debris. The two were killed on the spot,” said a distraught Mareppa. The brothers escaped with minor injuries.

Kengeri Police arrested the building owner Balaji and contractor Bhaskar and registered a case of death due to negligence against them.
