Cigarettes worth Rs 35 lakh looted

A gang of eight armed men allegedly decamped with branded cigarettes worth Rs 35 lakh from a truck which was transporting them, police said today.

The incident took place in the district in the wee hours of Monday, police said.

"A truck loaded with 'Four Square' cigarettes, was proceeding towards Bhiwandi-Kaman Road. Shortly after midnight, a group of eight armed persons stopped the vehicle and then pulled down the driver," API N G Gautam of Bhiwandi taluka police station told PTI.

The accused then looted the truck and ran away with the consignment worth Rs 35 lakh, he added.
The unidentified gang members have been booked under section 395 of the IPC and a hunt has been launched, police said.

The truck driver and the cleaner are being questioned in this connection, police said.
