A fight over a pair of jeans claimed the life of a woman in Aligarh town in Uttar Pradesh and left three persons injured.

Two persons have been taken into custody in connection with the violence, according to the police sources.

According to reports, Gunjan Dubey, who was doing her graduation from a college in Aligarh, used to often wear jeans. Her neighbour, identified as Phoolvati Devi, reportedly did not like her wearing jeans. Phoolvati often used to pass comment on her dress and also asked Gunjan’s family to bar her from wearing the jeans.

“We never took her comments seriously and ignored her,” said Gunjan’s father
Netrapal.

On Tuesday, Phoolvati again commented on Gunjan’s dress following which she protested and the two had a scuffle. Gunjan reportedly warned her not to wear jeans in future.

An enraged Phoolvati allegedly attacked Gunjan’s house with half a dozen armed men late on Tuesday night. A violent and bloody battle ensued after some people from the neighbourhood also sided with Netrapal. The two sides exchanged shots and used sticks to attack each other.

Gunjan’s mother, Kamalesh Devi, suffered a serious blow on the head and died on the spot, sources said. Gunjan and two others were injured in the violence.

Tension prevailed in the locality after the clash and security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.
