One dead as sedan rams into tempo

Six injured, police yet to arrest absconding driver

A youth was killed and six others were injured when a tempo turned turtle after being hit by a speeding car in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Thursday. The errant driver is yet to be arrested as he also undergoing treatment, police said.

The victim has been identified as Ashok Chaudhary, who hailed from Bihar’s Banka district, and was staying with family at Rangpuri Pahari near Vasant Kunj.

The injured have been identified as Krishna Nand Chaudhary, Raghu, Rajesh Chaudhary, Magru, Prakash and Ghanshyam.

According to police, they were returning home in a tempo after selling vegetables at Vasant Vihar when the accident happened.

“They were on Nelson Mandela Road when a speeding Chevrolet Cruz rammed into the tempo at 12.40 am,” a police officer said.

The tempo overturned on impact.

After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot. Ashok, Krishna, Raghu, Rajesh, Magru, Prakash and Ghanshyam were taken to Fortis Hospital in a PCR van, where Ashok was declared brought dead.

“Ashok died due to head injuries and excessive bleeding,” the officer added.
Errant driver Shivam Chawla, a resident of Vasant Kunj C-Block, was overpowered by locals.

He was, however, not arrested at the spot as he also sustained injuries. Sources said Shivam and one of his friends is undergoing treatment at Max Hospital in Saket.

A case of rash driving, causing death by negligence and causing hurt has been registered with Vasant Kunj (north) police station over Krishna’s statement.
