The State government has recalled the membership of six Syndicate members of Bangalore University. The members - K V Acharya, D S Krishna, C K Jagadish Prasad, Zaheeda Mulla, Manasa Nagabhushanam and T H Srinivasaiah - were nominated for a period of three years and their term as Syndicate members was to end on October 27, 2013. The government communicated its decision to Vice-Chancellor Prof Thimme Gowda on Saturday.

The V-C said the members are bound to abide by the decision according to the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000. As per Section 39 (1) of the Act, the members will hold office “during the pleasure of the nominating authority concerned.” The Act also specifies that no member will be eligible for a second term.

The government has not yet intimated to the university about appointing new members. “If we are asked to constitute an expert committee, we will do so. The powers are vested with the State government and we will wait for further directions,” Prof Thimme Gowda said.

The university, right now, can go ahead with the Syndicate meetings till the appointment of new members as there is a required quorum, he added.
