Vodafone slashes 2G data charges by 80%
In a move to woo customers to use data services, GSM operator Vodafone on Tuesday slashed 2G data usage charges in three circles by 80 per cent from 10p/10KB to 2p/10KB.

This rate would be applicable for all pre-paid and post-paid customers using 2G network on a ‘Pay as you Go’ basis. Two other circles, apart from Karnataka, where Vodafone reduced data charges are UP (West) and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh.

According Vodafone, since December last year, there has been a threefold spike in data usage in terms of revenue, usage and also in terms of number of users. The company has also achieved 70 per cent year-on-year growth in data revenue in Karnataka.

“The overall Internet penetration in India is low while the mobile penetration is very high. Most consumers will discover the power of the Internet via the mobile,” Vodafone India Business Head (Karnataka) Apoorva Mehrotra said.

Pointing out that 60 per cent of consumers have not even explored data services, the company wants to grab the opportunity in getting more customers through reduced costs of data browsing.

The company is also building content partnerships, simplifying pricing and offering choice to customer basis consumption patterns.
