A passion for mechanical items

Tune in to ‘Hugo’ on HBO at 3.40 pm on June 20. Hugo is in search of a special key that will open a treasure of secret mysteries. 

An orphan, he lives in a Paris railway station, tending to the station clocks during his uncle’s mysterious absence. He scrounges food from the vendors and steals mechanical parts from the owner of a toy shop, Georges Melies. 

In fact, Hugo’s father was a watchmaker and he has inherited his father’s talents for all things mechanical. 

Years before, Hugo’s father found an intricate mechanical man, but they could never figure out how it worked. 

Hugo befriends Melies’s ward, Isabelle and together they have an adventure, one that centres around Melies himself.

 The movie stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz and Ray Winstone.    

Triumph in the ring

Cinderella Man’ follows the journey of real-life boxing champ James J Braddock and his period os struggle in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. 

After suffering a series of defeats and a series of injuries — including a broken hand — he believes his career is over. Struck by poverty, his wife and children are forced to depend on public relief.

 When his trainer, Joe Gould, convinces him to take up one last fight, he wins against all adds and this paves the way for him to ascend to the top once more.

Watch the film on Zee Studio at 5.50 pm on June 20. It stars Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger, Paul Giamatti, Craig Bierko and Paddy Considine.

The lady in charge

Australia’ stars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson. 

In the year 1939, Lady Sarah Ashley travels from England to Australia to meet her husband Maitland. 

Drover goes to the city of Darwin to meet Sarah and take her to the farm. But on reaching there, they find Maitland murdered. 

Sarah is told that Neil, the administrator, has been stealing her cattle and he had killed her husband. 

Sarah fires Neil and taking the help of Drover, Nullah and a few others, begins to manage the farm all by herself.

Life changes in a moment

Watch ‘The Vow’ on Sony Pix at 6.45 pm on June 20. In this movie, Paige Collins (played by Rachel McAdams) and her husband Leo (portrayed by Channing Tatum) come out of a movie theatre.  On their way home, at a stop sign, Paige unbuckles her seatbelt to lean over and kiss Leo.

At that very moment, a truck rams their car from behind and Paige crashes through the windshield. Both of them are rushed to the emergency room and as Leo, in a voice-over, talks about how “moments of impact help in finding who we are”, the movie cuts to how Paige and Leo first met. 

The scenes of how they courted, proposed and married at the Art Institute of Chicago are interwoven with the present. The movie also stars Jessica Lange, Sam Neill, Jessica McNamee and Wendy Crewson.
